Station House Opera run projects and workshops for students and artists, designed to make their work accessible to all and to share skills and approaches to the company’s work.
They can encompass a broad range of performance ideas or may be tailored to a specific production and are created for participants with varying degrees of knowledge and experience. Workshops may be also instigated as part of the creative natural 'breathing' of the company's ongoing existence as a performance group, or as part of the introductory sessions in the development of a new production.
BACKWARDS Workshop
From 13 April - 22 May 2010
Battersea Arts Centre, London
Participants are needed for a series of workshops that will start the development process of a new show. Created by Station House Opera and commissioned by BAC, the show will be performed as part of May’s Scratch Festival at BAC.
Station House Opera, who recently created the site-specific project Dominoes, and previously the performance Mind Out, are holding a series of workshops exploring the idea of backwardsness. Participants will be invited to think and act backwards, reversing the usual notions of causality, morality, will, belief and common sense. Memory occurs before the event, desire after its fulfilment, and education results in ignorance. Punishment comes before the crime, and the beggar gives money to the rich.
The six workshops will lead to a Scratch performance at BAC as the first step towards a major new project. They will be led by artistic director Julian Maynard Smith and other members of the company. Participants will gain a unique insight into the creative development process alongside this highly respected performance company and will perform at BAC.
