Station House Opera's commission for CREATE09 took as its starting point the simplest of ideas... a line of dominoes. On Sunday 26th July 2009, thousands of concrete blocks were used to create a moving sculpture unfolding over the course of the day with the help of a huge production team supported by hundreds of volunteers.
As part of CREATE09 and the winner of the Bank of America Merrill Lynch CREATE Art Award, the thousands of breeze block dominoes made their way southwards through East and South East London, finishing at dusk in Greenwich.
In addition, the project has resulted in a film, not only of the performance elements, but with additional material filmed in each of the five host boroughs including footage of the dominoes making their way underground through a Victorian sewer, in a primary school in Hackney or in a cemetery in Waltham Forest.
The film is 38min and now available for screenings.
Following the success of Dominoes in East London, Station House Opera was invited by the Festival Entre Cour et Jardins to re-create the project for the opening of the Diese Festival in Dijon. The domino line went through the historic streets of Dijon, enter into private courts and public buildings, leading up to the opening concert of the summer festival. The French premiere of this extraordinary project.
Dominoes also opened Mladi Levi festival in Ljubljana in August 2011, creating a moving and unique sharing moment for local residents, audience members and artists (see video).
DOMINOES is a site specific project which can be re-created in different contexts.
